The Bisexual Pride Flag: Visibility and Solidarity

For years, the Bisexual community sought a symbol to call their own—one that would increase their visibility and stand as a beacon of pride and solidarity. Created in 1998, the Bisexual Pride Flag is a powerful and unapologetic statement, representing the history, community, and identity of bisexual people worldwide.

At Flags For Good, we believe everyone deserves to see themselves represented. Flying this flag is a celebration of identity and a clear message that you are not alone.

A Symbol is Born: The Flag's History

The Bisexual Pride Flag was designed by activist Michael Page and unveiled on December 5, 1998. Before its creation, the bisexual community often used other symbols, like overlapping pink and blue triangles, but lacked a distinct flag to rally behind within the broader LGBTQ+ Pride movement.

Page designed the flag specifically to give the bisexual community its own unique symbol. He wanted a flag that would be a source of pride and increase visibility, combating the erasure and misconceptions that bisexual people often face both inside and outside the queer community.

Meaning in the Overlap

The flag’s design is a simple yet brilliant metaphor. The colors are inspired by the "biangles" symbol and carry a deep meaning:

  • The Pink Stripe: Represents same-gender attraction (homosexual).
  • The Blue Stripe: Represents different-gender attraction (heterosexual).
  • The Overlapping Lavender Stripe: The purple (lavender) stripe in the center is the product of pink and blue overlapping. It represents attraction across the gender spectrum, beautifully symbolizing the "bi" in bisexuality. As Michael Page himself said, "The purple pixels of color are a blend of the pink and blue, just as I see myself blending in both the gay and straight communities."
