The International Flag of Planet Earth: A Symbol for Us All

In an age of space exploration and global connection, what flag do we fly for humanity? The International Flag of Planet Earth is a modern answer to that question—a symbol designed to unite us all, regardless of national borders. It’s a reminder that we share this fragile planet, and it is our collective responsibility to care for it, and for each other.

At Flags For Good, we are proud to support this vision of unity. This isn't just a flag; it's a statement of global citizenship and hope for the future.

A Vision for Humanity: The Flag's Origin

The International Flag of Planet Earth was created in 2015 by Swedish designer Oskar Pernefeldt as his graduation project at the Beckmans School of Design. His goal was to design a flag that could be used to represent our entire planet, especially in the context of space travel, but also as a symbol of unity right here at home.

The design was not arbitrary; it was carefully crafted based on the principles of vexillology (the study of flags) to be simple, meaningful, and instantly recognizable. Since its creation, it has been unofficially adopted by people and organizations around the globe who believe in its message.

The Meaning in the Design

Every part of this elegant design is rich with symbolism, creating a layered and powerful message:

  • The Seven Rings: The seven interlocking rings form the shape of a flower, a universal symbol of life on Earth. The rings are intertwined to represent the idea that everything on our planet is interconnected, directly or indirectly.
  • The Blue Field: The vibrant blue background represents the water that covers most of our planet and is essential for all life. Seen from a distance, the blue could also represent the universe, with our planet floating within it.
  • A Symbol of Unity: Together, the elements create a unified image of life, connection, and our shared home, reminding us of what we have in common in an often-divided world.
