Adopted in 1901, this flag was Maine's official banner for a fleeting but memorable eight years. Its design was brilliantly simple: a majestic pine tree and the North Star on a buff-colored field. It was unique, clean, and perfectly captured the essence of Maine.
Sadly, in 1909, it was replaced by the current seal-based design. However, in recent years, a massive grassroots movement has grown to bring back the original 1901 flag. Mainers and admirers alike are choosing to fly this banner once again, embracing it as the true symbol of their state.
The Meaning in the Design
The power of the 1901 flag lies in its elegant and direct symbolism:
- The Pine Tree: A symbol of New England for centuries, the Eastern White Pine represents Maine's rugged, natural landscape and its famous timber industry. It stands for sturdiness and perseverance.
