On May 11, 2024, Minnesota raised a new banner, a flag designed to reflect its people, its waters, and its unique place in the nation. The new North Star Flag is more than a replacement; it's a modern symbol for a diverse and forward-looking state, created by Minnesotans, for Minnesotans.

From Complex to Clear: A Redesign for the People
The journey to a new flag was driven by a desire for a symbol that every Minnesotan could connect with. The previous flag, with its intricate state seal, was seen by many as outdated and difficult to interpret. After receiving over 2,000 public submissions, the State Emblems Redesign Commission selected a design by Andrew Prekker that was simple, powerful, and rich with meaning.
This new flag leaves behind the controversies of the past to embrace a design that is both inclusive and instantly recognizable.
The Meaning in the Design
Every element of the new Minnesota flag was chosen to represent a core aspect of the state’s identity:
- The Dark Blue Shape: This abstract form represents the shape of Minnesota itself.
- The North Star: A brilliant, eight-pointed star sits within the state shape, a direct nod to the state motto, "L'Étoile du Nord." This star symbolizes unity and guidance and is the same star featured in the rotunda of the state capitol..
- The Light Blue Field: The solid light blue field represents the state's abundant waters, from its 10,000 lakes to the headwaters of the Mississippi River. The Dakota name for the region, Mni Sóta Makoce, is often translated as "land where the waters reflect the skies."
