Djbouti Flag 🇩🇯
3' x 5' polyester Djibouti Flag with grommets and double-stitched edges to reduce fraying.
✍️ The Design: The national flag of Djibouti is a tribute to the "Gateway to the Red Sea." Adopted upon the nation's independence in 1977, the design features two horizontal bands of light blue and green, joined at the hoist by a white isosceles triangle containing a single red star. This layout was inspired by the flag of the Ligue Populaire Africaine pour l'Indépendance (LPAI), the movement that led the country to sovereignty.
The colors are deeply symbolic of the land and its people. The light blue stripe represents the clear sky and the surrounding sea, while also honoring the Issa people. The green stripe symbolizes the eternal earth and the lush vegetation of the territory, while representing the Afar people. The white triangle stands for peace, a central tenet of the young republic. At its heart, the red star represents unity and the blood shed by martyrs during the struggle for freedom. Because of its location in the Horn of Africa, the design is often seen alongside the Somalia flag and the Ethiopia flag in regional collections.
National Days of Celebration: The flag is the focal point of Independence Day on June 27, marking the date in 1977 when the nation broke away from French colonial rule. It is also a vital symbol during Unity Day, where the red star serves as a reminder of the harmonious coexistence of the nation's diverse ethnic groups.
