The Jolly Roger: The Iconic Pirate Flag ☠️
While we often think of "The" pirate flag, history tells us there were dozens of variations, down to each pirate themselves. The term "Jolly Roger" likely comes from the French joli rouge (pretty red), referring to the blood-red flags early privateers flew to show they'd give no quarter. Eventually, pirates switched to black, using symbols of mortality—skeletons, hourglasses, and the iconic skull—to strike fear into merchant ships. The goal was simple: intimidate the enemy into surrendering without a shot being fired.
This design, with the grinning skull and crossed thigh bones, is the most famous of them all. In modern days, pirate flags have been used by cultural rebels and people pushing against the status quo.
We (Flags For Good) had our local designer friend Hot Jupiter design this specific skull and crossbones for our first pirate flag, benefiting the oceans and their survival.
