Scotland Flag 🏴
The flag of Scotland, known as the Saltire or the Saint Andrew's Cross, is recognized as one of the oldest national flags in continuous use. It is simply a white heraldic cross (decussate) on a blue field.
The design is rooted in the tradition of Saint Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland. According to church history, he was crucified on an X-shaped cross, a shape that has defined the Scottish national emblem for centuries. The historical origin of the flag is often traced to the Battle of Athelstaneford in 832 AD. Legend states that King Angus II of the Picts observed a white cross formed by clouds against the blue sky during the conflict, interpreting it as a divine omen of victory.
Over time, the Saltire became the official national banner, appearing on the coinage of Scotland in the 14th century and serving as a primary component of the Union Jack since 1606. In 2003, the Scottish Parliament standardized the official color of the field as Pantone 300, ensuring a consistent shade of blue for official government and national use.
