California State Flag
3' x 5' polyester California State Flag with grommets and double-stitched edges to reduce fraying.
✍️ The Design: Adopted officially by the state legislature in 1911, the California flag, famously known as the Bear Flag, is one of the most iconic and recognizable state flags in the United States. It stands as a tribute to the rugged independence and pioneering spirit of the Golden State.
The design is rooted in the 1846 Bear Flag Revolt, where a group of settlers rose up to declare California an independent republic. The California Grizzly Bear—now extinct but immortalized on this banner—serves as a symbol of immense strength and unyielding resistance. The lone red star in the upper hoist may be a nod to the "Lone Star of Texas," representing the shared struggle for independence. Below the bear, a solid red stripe along the base provides a bold foundation, a design found on few other flags; while the words "California Republic" remind us of the state's brief (29 days) but historic stint as a sovereign nation before joining the Union.
History & Meaning: There is so much more to this flag than meets the eye, from the specific bear that served as the model to the hidden messages behind its colors.
