Cuba Flag 🇨🇺
3' x 5' polyester Cuban Flag with grommets and double-stitched edges to reduce fraying.
✍️ The Design: The national flag of Cuba, famously known as La Estrella Solitaria (The Lone Star), is a powerful symbol born from the 19th-century struggle for independence. Designed in 1849 by the Venezuelan-born General Narciso López and the Cuban poet Miguel Teurbe Tolón while in exile in New York, the banner was created to represent a vision of a free and sovereign Cuba.
The flag features five horizontal stripes. The three blue stripes represent the three military departments into which the island was divided during the colonial era: Occidental, Central, and Oriental. The two white stripes symbolize the purity and strength of the patriot cause. On the hoist side, a red equilateral triangle evokes the blood shed by heroes in the fight for freedom, while also representing the revolutionary ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity. At the center of the triangle sits the white five-pointed star, a beacon of absolute independence and the light that guides the nation toward its future.
The Two Wings of a Bird: The history of this flag is deeply intertwined with that of its Caribbean neighbor. In 1895, the Puerto Rico flag was designed by reversing the colors of the Cuban banner to symbolize their shared struggle against Spanish colonial rule. This profound connection is often celebrated through the famous poem by Lola Rodríguez de Tió, who described the two islands as "two wings of the same bird."
Officially adopted in 1902, the Cuban flag remains a proud tribute to a nation with a fierce revolutionary spirit and a rich cultural identity. It stands as a historic symbol of resilience and unity for Cubans everywhere.
