✍️ The Design: Home of Flags For Good HQ! We love Indianapolis and we love the Indy Flag are proud to help spread its use.
The flag of Indianapolis, adopted in 1963, is widely considered one of the best-designed city flags in the United States. Designed in 1962 by Roger Gohl as a class assignment, this flag has stood the test of time and has become an iconic symbol of Indy.
The design is centered around a white star, representing the Soldiers and Sailors Monument and the city's role as the state capital. The star sits inside a red circle, which symbolizes the vibrant heart of the city (Monument Circle). The dark blue field is divided by a white cross, representing the intersection of Meridian and Market Streets—the very center of Indy’s unique "Mile Square" grid.
It’s a masterclass in vexillological simplicity, using the city's actual geography to create a bold, recognizable symbol of Hoosier pride.
