✍️ The Design: The national flag of the Dominican Republic is a masterpiece of revolutionary symbolism and faith. Designed by the founding father Juan Pablo Duarte and first raised in 1844, this banner tells the story of a nation that fought hard to define its own identity. Its design was famously inspired by the Haiti flag, but with a white cross added to symbolize the Christian heritage of the people.
The flag is divided by a white central cross, which represents salvation and the peace of the Dominican people. The ultramarine blue rectangles symbolize liberty, progress, and the sky from which God protects the nation. The vermilion red sections honor the blood shed by the heroes who fought for independence. At the center of the cross sits the national coat of arms, which holds a unique world record: the Dominican Republic is the only country in the world to feature a Bible on its national flag. The Bible is open to the Gospel of John, chapter 8, verse 32, which reads: Y la verdad os hará libres ("And the truth shall make you free").
National Days of Celebration: The flag is the heartbeat of the nation during Independence Day on February 27, marking the end of the 22-year occupation by Haiti in 1844. It also plays a vital role on Restoration Day every August 16, which commemorates the "Grito de Capotillo" and the start of the war to restore sovereignty from Spain. During these holidays, especially in February which coincides with Carnival, the streets of Santo Domingo and Santiago are transformed into a sea of red, white, and blue as citizens display the banner from every balcony and storefront.
It stands as a historic symbol of sovereignty and remains a core part of the shared heritage of the Caribbean alongside the Puerto Rico flag.

Yes! Our single-layer flags have full rich color on both sides of the fabric.

This flag is single-layer, meaning it is printed on the front. On the reverse side, the text will appear mirrored. If you want it oriented correctly on both sides, look for our flags that have a "double-layer" option.

It really depends on the environment it is flying in. Direct UV exposure, wind, rain, latitude, and especially hitting things like the brick on a house will shorten your flag's life. Also, dark colors fade first and the fastest. See our care page to make your flag last the longest!

We ship most things that don't include poles in discreet black eco-mailers. They're made from recovered ocean-bound plastic, so even our packaging does good!
Anything shipped with a flag pole, garden pole, or large numbers of flags comes in a standard cardboard box.

Standard shipping typically takes 3-5 business days within the continental US, while expedited options are available for faster delivery if you choose to upgrade. We try to get orders in the mail as soon as we can. This could be as fast as the next day or take us a few days during busy times.
