Indiana Flag
🏴 Indiana flag with grommets and double stitched edges to reduce fraying.
✍️ The Design: Adopted in 1917 to celebrate Indiana's centennial, this design was the winner of a state-wide competition sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
The flag features a rich blue field with a gold torch at its center. This torch represents liberty and enlightenment, with the rays emanating from it symbolizing their far-reaching influence. Surrounding the torch are 19 stars: 13 stars in the outer loop represent the original 13 colonies, five stars in the inner loop represent the next five states admitted to the Union, and the single, larger star above the torch represents Indiana as the 19th state.
Then right before it was adopted, the senate decided to add the word "Indiana" shoved into the field of stars. So for our "Better State Flag" series, in the effort to follow flag design best practices, we went back to the original design and just removed the small word "INDIANA" from the flag.
